New Math Shapes a Quilt

Meticulously crafted from a QFK kit, this quilt will be sent on to a hospitalized child, perhaps the same age as the kids who helped make it.

Trying to teach third-grade math students about the idea of rotations, flips and translations was a challenge for Illinois teacher Mrs. Davy until she realized the math program involved making paper quilt blocks.  A long-time sewer, Mrs. D. asked her class if they would like to make a real quilt for QFK.  They loved the idea, so she ordered a quilt kit from headquarters.

Shortly afterward, they learned that a girl in their small school district had been diagnosed with cancer, so another quilt went onto the drawing board.

Math lessons were spent measuring, adding, cutting, and sewing, using the pre-cut kit pieces as a guide for the second quilt.  Not only did the kids learn their math concepts in a practical context, but they also gained an understanding of what it means to give comfort to someone else.

Mrs. Davy writes, “They learned pride in their accomplishments, but even better they learned compassion and love for other people, even those they had never met.  Thank you for letting us participate in your program.”

Thank you, Mrs. D., for your compassion, your sewing expertise and your skillful guidance!
