100 Quilts Cruise to Haiti

Janel unfolds one of the quilts to show Sister Marthe as Michele Mac Gregor stands by ready to translate.

Janel Tomalis of the Middletown, PA, Chapter had more on her mind that relaxation during a recent cruise.

Janel and her husband took a side trip to donate 100 quilts to Sister Marthe, SJC from College Saint Joseph de Cluny in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. The spry 86-year old nun understood English, but needed help in replying. Michele Mac Gregor, (in the yellow shirt)  from Royal Caribbean, helped in the translation.

Janel continued, “Sister showed the quilt to her driver and then wanted a picture with my husband and me in front of the 5 boxes of quilts. Sister was happy to know the quilts were in space saver bags that she can reuse. The quilts will be going to some of their 1700 poor children they service, both in school and in the community. Sister Marthe did say that the children will send notes, and perhaps pictures too. It was a very moving experience for me.”

In addition to quilts from Janel’s Middletown chapter, she received quilts from QFK chapters from Bakersfield, CA, Hagerstown, MD, Emmaus, PA and Maryland friends.
